Describing location (Sample, level 1)

This series of Topics will give you the words you need to describe the precise location of parts and issues on the aircraft. 

Look at these sentences, then do the Quiz: 

  1. The forward ( or front) pressure bulkhead is damaged.
  2. Containers are stored in the aft (or rear) cargo compartment.
  3. The fuel tank is between the front and rear spars.
  4. The lefthand inboard aileron has jammed.
  5. The righthand outboard flap needs adjusting.
  6. The inner fuel tanks are filled first.
  7. Seepage is visible on the outer surface of the tube.
  8. The flaps are on the trailing edge of the wing.
  9. The slats are on the leading edge of the wing.
  10. The satcom antenna is on the upper fuselage.
  11. The information is on the lower ECAM display unit
  12. Access to the tanks is through the wing  bottom skin.
  13. The top skin upper surface has to be cleaned.
  14. The overhead  light does not come on.

Language notes

  • Forward (or forwards) is usually an adverb. You move forwards (or backwards). It is (like aft) used as an adjective (the forward cabin) only in the context of ships and airplanes. The common abbreviation (as an adjective) is FWD.
  • Lefthand and righthand are just the same as left and right. However, they are perhaps more precise because right can also mean correct. e.g. the right side can be the opposite of the left side or the wrong side, which can lead to confusion.
  • Leading edge and trailing edge are terms (meaning at the front or at the rear ) specific to airplanes and aerodynamics.
  • Upper is an adjective; the verb is to raise. Lower is an adjective and a verb.
