The aim of this course is to enable users to learn English vocabulary specifc to their working environment (essentially aircraft assembly and aircraft maintenance).
These 20 units contain learning materials in the following areas:
- Vocabulary, verbs in particular, used to describe actions on the FAL and Flightline: 20 Topics c. 200 key words
- Vocabulary used to describe Quality checks, problems and corrective actions: 10 Topics c. 120 key words
- Vocabulary used to describe the administrative environment and associated actions and specific paperwork. 8 Topics c. 100 key words
- Summaries of basic grammar with examples from the FAL/Flightline environment. 20 Topics including 12 short video explanations (with subtitles).
- Specific language needed for Talking about time, deadlines etc, as well as location and movement, all with examples from the workplace. 6 Topics
- Extracts from Job Cards detailing work orders for the FAL and Flightline. 12 Topics
- Descriptions of aircraft systems (fuel, hydraulics etc) with specific vocabulary. 8 Topics
- Short recorded dialogues that focus on interactions between colleagues, and/or reponses to questions and requests raised by customers.
- There are also ‘Extras’ which include help with pronunciation, and exercises for elementary learners focusing on less technical but very common language.
- Learners can Test their Progress having completed the first 10 lessons, and again at the end of the course.
Each Topic presents a selection of targeted vocabulary with a recording (British and American speakers), explanations of the terms in English, and translations into French, Spanish and German made available. Users are encouraged not to go immediately to the translations, which are only visible on a ‘click’. (Translations to other languages can be added on request).
The first 5 units aim to present more accessible language, but in general there is no obvious progression from ‘easy’ to ‘more difficult’.
The objective is to enable a wide range of users to benefit from the materials by offering choices in the way they are approached. For example, weaker learners can focus on the written text and use the translations to work through the materials. Higher levels are encouraged to listen to the recording without reading the text in order to improve their ability to understand technical language spoken at normal ‘native-speaker’ speed.
The ‘mix’ of vocabulary aims to present some challenging words to more advanced learners while also providing more accessible words to elementary learners.
Each Topic contains a Quiz (or two). The objective is not to test, but to help learners acquire the vocabulary in a relatively ‘light’ and enjoyable way.
The quizzes provide different levels of difficulty to suit different levels of knowledge and can be repeated as many times as required. Again, the user can choose the level of help they need to complete the task.
Users may also follow a route through the materials according to their needs and preferences e.g. following those working in Quality can follow the ‘Quality vocabulary’ Topics, those working on the aircraft can focus on the ‘job cards’ Topics, etc.
